 Assessment and Intervention in AAC at the Penn State Speech and Hearing Clinic
What happens in an AAC assessment?
Each assessment is customized to meet the needs of the individual. Typically, an assessment
involves:
- Visits to client’s home, school, work site, etc.
- In-house assessments at the Penn State clinic
- Wrap up meeting at Penn State to discuss assessment results and intervention recommendation
Throughout the assessment, the following areas are considered:
- Assessment of the individual’s communication needs
- With whom the individual needs to communicate
- Where the individual needs to communicate
- When the individual needs to communicate
- Why the individual needs to communicate
- About what the individual needs to communicate
- Via what modalities the individual needs to communicate (e.g., face to face, telephone, writing)
- Assessment of the individual’s skills
- Understanding of language
- Expression of language in any modality (e.g., speech, writing, gestures, etc.)
- Use of symbols such as gestures, signs, photos, written words
- Assessment of opportunity barriers and facilitative strategies (i.e., those things that either help or hinder the individual’s communication attempts)
- Being given enough time to communicate
- Having access to a communication system
Outomes of Assessment:
- Recommendations for appropriate AAC systems
- Goals for the individual to enhance his / her communicative competence
- Goals / strategies for partners to support the individual’s communication
