 Assessment and Intervention in AAC at the Penn State Speech and Hearing Clinic
What happens in AAC intervention?
Intervention is customized to meet the needs of each individual. Typically, intervention involves
both the individual who requires AAC and the family / significant others.
Intervention focuses on building the individual’s communicative competence:
- Learning language skills
- Learning how to use AAC system(s) for communication
- Learning how to operate the systems
- Learning how to interact effectively with others
- Learning how to repair communication breakdowns
Intervention also focuses on teaching partners how to use the AAC systems and how to encourage
the individual who uses AAC to communicate.
There are several programs available:
- Adult or Child Therapy Program
- Typically individual therapy sessions
- An average of 2 hours per week for children and 4-6 hours per week for adults
- Residential Adult Therapy Program
- Intensive therapy involving both individual and group therapy sessions
- A minimum of 10 hours of therapy per week
- Theatre Camp
- Offered occasionally in the summer
- Has involved children with and without disabilities
